After working in the private sector, Julia Brownley entered public service because she wanted to help children and families receive better resources in local schools. After serving on her local school board, she was elected to the California State Assembly, where she served on every educational committee, including serving as Chairwoman of the Committee on Education.
Julia was elected to Congress in 2012, and has been focusing on the issues important to Ventura County families – increasing opportunities for middle class families, making higher education more affordable, preserving and protecting our environment, making sure our veterans receive the services they deserve, and ensuring equality for all.
As the leading Democrat on the Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Health, Julia worked with local stakeholders to dramatically increase the size of our community clinic and to increase the number of health care providers and the breadth of services available to our local veterans. As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, she was able to pass a surface transportation bill that will provide more funds to invest in our crumbling infrastructure. As a member of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues, she co-sponsored the Fair Minimum Wage Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act and advocated for changes to make the tax code fairer for working families.
Julia is committed to staying above the partisan gridlock in Washington which is impeding progress. She has a strong record of working with both Democrats and Republicans to get things done for Ventura County. Most recently, the Female Veteran Suicide Prevention Act—a bill she authored that would require the VA to evaluate suicide prevention and mental health programs with women specific metrics to address the high rate of suicide among female veterans—passed out of the House of Representatives with overwhelming bipartisan support.
Our children—and our economy—need Julia Brownley in Congress, standing up for the people of Ventura County.
Happy early St. Patrick’s Day from Ventura! We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day to join the Elks Lodge in their 29th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade.
It was wonderful to see so many Ventura County residents turn out for the Planned Parenthood rally last week. There is no doubt that President Trump and the Republicans are hellbent on taking away a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions and to take back critical protections in current healthcare legislation. Our voices are being heard. We must continue to speak out.
